Muni's Passports Encourage
Visitors to Use Transit in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCOJune 20, 1996Ever since they were first introduced in 1989,
the San Francisco Municipal Railway's (Muni's) Passports have encouraged
visitors to explore the city on Muni's buses, streetcars, and the
world-famous cable cars.

The Passports have made a convenient transit system even easier to use,
and visitors have been able to forget about the problems and expense of
driving and parking in a traffic-congested city.

The Passport program has been successful not only in increasing transit
use, but also in bringing in more revenues for the city. In fiscal year
1989/90, revenue from the Passports was just over $670,000, but in 1994/95,
it was over $3,400,000.

One-day and three-day Passports were introduced in June 1989, and
seven-day Passports in July 1991. One-day Passports cost $6, three-day
Passports $10, and seven-day Passports $15. The purchaser chooses which day
or consecutive days he or she wants to use by scratching off the month(s)
and day(s) on the Passport.

The Passports are good for unlimited riding on Muni lines, including the
cable car lines at no extra charge, and are good for a discount for Muni's
special service to Giants and 49ers games. Making them even more of a
bargain, the Passports are also good for discounts at many places of
interest, including the museums in Golden Gate Park, the Exploratorium at
the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District, and attractions at
Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39.

With a Muni Passport, visitors have convenient access to the many points
of interest in the city and find it easy to explore San Francisco's colorful
neighborhoods, including Chinatown, North Beach, the Haight-Ashbury,
and the Mission District.

Shopping is convenient too, whether it is in the Union Square area, at
the Embarcadero Centers in the Financial District, on Union Street, or at
the Stonestown Galleria Shopping Center on 19th Avenue.
